# Somatic Shaking: Can Trembling on Purpose Really Settle Your Nervous System?

Here is the straight answer, since the question is suddenly everywhere: somatic shaking, the practice of deliberately trembling or bouncing your body for a few minutes to discharge stress, is plausible, free, safe for most people, and not yet well proven. The logic it borrows from animal biology is real. The research behind it is thin: small studies, mostly self-reported, promising rather than conclusive. If it feels good, it can earn a modest place in a recovery routine. If it makes you feel worse, that is worth taking seriously, and we will get to why.

What follows is the honest version of the trend currently filling your feed.

## The oldest move in the animal kingdom

An antelope that survives a chase will often stand and tremble hard before rejoining the herd. A dog shakes itself after the vet, after a telling-off, after another dog has been rude to it. Trembling after threat is one of the most widely observed behaviours in mammals, and humans do it too: after near-misses in the car, before interviews, at funerals. We tend to read our own shaking as weakness and suppress it. The animals just get on with it.

The therapist Peter Levine built Somatic Experiencing around this observation in the 1990s, arguing that the post-threat shake lets the stress response complete rather than remain held in the body. "Held" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and whether tension is literally stored in tissue is scientifically contested. What is not contested is the behaviour itself, or the intuition behind the trend: if bodies tremble after stress anyway, perhaps trembling on purpose gives an overloaded system a way to finish what it started.

None of this is new, incidentally. Many qigong lineages open practice with minutes of loose, rhythmic bouncing through the knees. Kundalini traditions treat tremor during practice as unremarkable. And in the 2000s, David Berceli formalised TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises), a protocol that uses fatiguing postures to invite a natural tremor in the legs. The TikTok version is the newest branch of a rather old tree.

## What the evidence actually says

Less than the videos suggest; more than nothing.

The best-studied version is TRE, and the studies are small: pilot trials and observational work in groups such as nurses and emergency workers, generally reporting reduced self-rated stress and anxiety. There are no large randomised controlled trials. Sample sizes are modest, control groups are rare, and outcomes rely heavily on people saying they feel better, which is exactly the kind of evidence base that flatters any pleasant practice. Reviewers in this area keep reaching the same verdict: promising, worth studying properly, not yet demonstrated.

There is also a duller explanation worth naming. Any practice that gets you off a chair, moving rhythmically, breathing more slowly and paying attention to your body for five minutes would be expected to help somewhat. Shaking may be less a special mechanism than a decent delivery vehicle for those unglamorous ingredients. For the person doing it, the distinction hardly matters. For the person about to buy a £200 "nervous system reset" course built on it, it matters quite a lot.

## Why it suits a wired system

Grant the uncertainty, and there are still reasons this particular practice fits the exhausted-but-agitated state so many working adults live in.

Rhythmic, repetitive movement tends to slow the breath and give attention somewhere physical to rest, both of which support parasympathetic activity, the settling half of the nervous system. Shaking is also brief, undemanding and impossible to do perfectly, which is precisely its charm. A system stuck in drive often cannot sit still: told to meditate, it spends ten minutes rehearsing emails with its eyes closed. Movement-first practices meet that body where it is instead of asking it to be calm as a precondition for calming down.

The caveat runs the other way too. If shaking leaves you jangled, anxious or oddly emotional, that is information, not failure. Shorten it, ground yourself afterwards, or start with something quieter. ## How to try it without the hype

Stand with feet hip-width apart, knees soft. Bounce gently through your heels, loose rather than vigorous, and let the movement travel: ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, jaw. Let your hands flop. Two to five minutes is plenty. Then stop, stand still for thirty seconds, and notice what your body does with the quiet. That after-pause is where most people feel the point of the exercise.

Use it at transitions: after the commute, between meetings, before a conversation you are dreading. Stop if you feel dizzy. And resist the trend's usual failure mode, which is converting a three-minute reset into another daily obligation with a streak counter. This is a tool for a moment, not a moral achievement.

No, though they are related. Probably not. Shaking raises arousal before it settles it, and some nervous systems, especially wired or trauma-affected ones, tip into activation rather than release. The fix is usually dose and landing: shake for one minute rather than five, keep it gentle, and give yourself a longer still pause afterwards with slow exhales. If it consistently leaves you worse, drop it without guilt. No practice is compulsory, and a settling effect you have to force is not a settling effect.

### When is it most useful during a working day?

At the seams. The moments between one demand and the next are where stress accumulates unnoticed: arriving home still in meeting mode, moving from one difficult call straight into another. Sixty seconds of loose shaking at those junctions works as a physical punctuation mark, telling your body one thing has ended before the next begins.
